Climate change

Climate Change image © iStockphoto.comThe ESF-Works Climate Change theme focuses on new jobs and new skills to provide opportunities; it looks in depth at the employment and skills aspects of moving to a low-carbon economy.

There are several ESF mainstream and innovation projects that have been awarded ESF funding to develop green jobs and training programmes. The following projects have been visited and will be available to read soon:

  • Low Carbon Living (Yorkshire and The Humber)

If your project addresses issues that help fight climate change, then one of our regional coordinators would like to come and visit you. ESF-Works will publish an article that focuses on the methodologies you are using to train, educate and upskill people for green jobs.

Information about the theme

The UN Climate Change conference in Copenhagen during December 2009 resulted in all representative countries being asked to spell out by 1 February 2010 their pledges for curbing carbon emissions by 2020. Consultations are now underway for public sector and statutory organisations to report on their assessment of the risks that climate change poses to them and the actions they are going to take in response. In parallel, each region in England is now in the process of revising its Regional ESF Framework so that it contains a special focus on training for new 'green jobs' in a low-carbon economy.

Reports, interviews, information and links will be uploaded to the site during the year, so please come back to check out the updates.

Featured project

Eco-Advantage

Raising awareness of climate change, practical responses to it, and developing related skills which will be increasingly needed in the future, is at the heart of the Eco-Advantage project. The project is a partnership between Medway, Reading and Basingstoke Councils and Cementaprise Training, supported by the ESF Innovation, Transnationality and Mainstreaming programme (ITM).
