ESF-Works exists to share the stories of the people, practice and policy that the European Social Fund in England supports. The ESF-Works team come from a variety of backgrounds, with a wide range of expertise. All of us are passionate about showcasing the incredible work that the ESF helps to deliver. Who we are

John Bell, Policy Editor

John Bell

John Bell brings many years worth of experience with the European Social Fund to ESF-Works, as a researcher, an evaluator, and as director of the support units for the Employment, Adapt and Equal programmes. John has always been particularly interested in turning policy into practice, both in the UK and across the EU, and will be helping to make sure that ESF-Works contributes fully to gaining the greatest benefits from the great public investment that ESF in the UK represents, in particular, by stimulating debate and reflection and by linking ESF to other policies and programmes.

Daisy Chatterton, Project and Development Manager

Daisy Chatterton

Daisy has an extensive track record of EU project management and a thorough understanding of programmes at strategic and operational levels. She set up and managed equal-works.com which captures both the strategic and practical experience of the seven year ESF Equal programme in GB. Daisy works closely with the ESF Division to understand and interpret the ongoing project requirement. Her role with ESF-Works is to lead the team in delivering a dynamic website which is responsive to the needs of its target audience.

Philip Hanes, ESF-Works Regional Coordinator (North)

Philip Hanes

Philip has six years’ experience of programme management of a variety of external funding sources (NDC, SRB, ERDF, ESF, NRF, WNF) to deliver a number of regeneration initiatives in Manchester. He has also worked in a communications role with the Greater Manchester Prime Contractor of the ESF and Skills Funding Agency-funded nextstep contract, which involved extensive partnership-working with subcontractors, training providers, Jobcentre Plus and FE and HE colleges. Philip reviews ESF projects and their impact to produce content for ESF-Works. Working with project leads, project participants and strategic bodies he writes content and organises interviews to illustrate project performance and help to further develop the thematic pages of the site.

Pat Maurice, ESF-Works Regional Coordinator (Midlands)

Pat Maurice

Pat’s wide range of experience spans the healthcare and educational sectors. She spent a number of years as managing editor in humanities and social sciences for Cambridge University Press, prior to which she managed a NHS Task Force helping hospital trusts achieve government targets for reducing junior doctors’ hours. Her role on ESF Works involves liaising with key regional and thematic funding bodies, stakeholders and service providers, and demonstrating how ESF funding is making a difference to specific disadvantaged target groups through engaging with people at all levels from project participants to prime contractors.

Amy Schofield, ESF-Works Web Editor

Amy Schofield

Amy works closely with the regional coordinators, policy editor and the rest of the ESF-Works team to make sure that all the website content is high quality and up-to-date. She is an experienced journalist, editor and writer who has worked for both online and print publications, specialising in education, health and parenting. She has also written and edited a number of books about primary education. Amy is responsible for developing the social media presence of ESF-Works, and for broadening the range of content on the site to ensure that the stories of the people who have been helped by the European Social Fund in England, from policy makers to participants, reach as many people as possible.

Mark Turnock, ESF-Works Project Coordinator

Mark Turnock

Mark provides support to the central management team and regional coordinators, in the delivery and development of ESF-Works.  Mark coordinates the production and upload of content to the site and is the main point of contact for enquires from internal and external customers.  Mark’s experience ranges from business banking, transaction processing to relationship management, but more recently, he worked for a large social housing provider in the north east of England helping drive forward housing renewal, community development and environmental sustainability.

Chrissie Upton, ESF-Works Regional Coordinator (South)

Chrissie Upton

A qualified Skills for Life professional, Chrissie has worked within the learning and skills sector for over 17 years, mainly within local authorities, and is experienced in the infrastructure and challenges of the English post-16 education system. Chrissie is experienced in partnership development, project management, quality improvement, strategic organisational reviews and external funding bids.  Chrissie’s role includes relationship management and liaison with all Co-Financing organisations but especially the Skills Funding Agency, DWP, JCP, NOMS and London co-funders to identify high performing projects. Chrissie works with projects to create content for ESF Works, through Short Reviews and longitudinal Case Studies, which involve telephone and filmed interviews, personal visits and tracking of progress over time.

Pippa Wong, ESFW Case Study Lead

Pippa Wong

Pippa works on a part-time basis for Tribal as the Case Study Lead for ESF-Works.  After spending 18 years working in a number of European Funded Programmes, she now directs the development of the case studies for ESF-Works.com, working with the team to gather written and video material for the website, and connecting its relevance to the themes being covered by ESF. She is delighted to be part of the current ESF Programme with direct access to the Projects, and being able to promote and present their important work.
